Annual General Meeting Report 2008

The Association’s Annual General Meeting for 2008 will be held on the 20 June 2008.

The current President, County Councillor Wendy Dwyer will retire and will be followed by Councillor Alan Whittaker.

Nora Ward is the current Chair but will be up for election at the meeting.

Sophie Thompson was presented with a cheque for £250, which will go towards her training fees, by LPFA President, Councillor Alan Whittaker, Chairperson of Lancashire County Council.

Cllr Whittaker visited Coppull Leisure Centre recently to make the presentation, but not before he was treated to a demonstration of Sophie’s trampolining skills.

Sophie is currently a top level Grade One trampolinist and competes at National level at Under 15s. She trains in Birkenhead three to four times a week but also has time at Coppull Leisure Centre with ex British Champion Lee Mallom, who coaches her on basic moves.

Natalie Haythornthwaite, photographed below playing in an U16 tournament in Turnford, despite her team being an only U15s age group - they still won. Natalie wrote that the grant of £250 recently presented to her by Executive Member, Joe Cooney of Pendle Leisure Trust, assisted her to travel to tournaments.

Richard Johnson is holding the trophy following the Northern Counties U'16s Final in which he played. The match was against Northumberland, with Lancashire winning 3-1.

Richard recently went to Malta representing Great British Catholic Schools at Football.

Richard received a £100 LPFA grant towards his travelling expenses to tournaments which was presented to him recently by our Executive Member Peter Croasdale.

Damon Pegg is aiming high with the goal of securing a place on the Great Britain Junior Squad for 2009, Junior European and Junior Words selection 2010 and ultimately the London Olympics in 2012.

Peter Croasdale visited Damon to present the grant cheque.

Just the sort of ambition the LPFA is looking to assist. The Committee approved a grant of £525 recently, which will cover one years cost for coaching fees.

Our Executive Member Peter Croasdale will be visiting Damon soon to present the cheque at one of his practice sessions. Peter will have plenty of opportunity as Damon trains up to five times a week at the SKK Judo Club in Newton-Le-Willows.

Alex enters competitions throughout the year with the club and has a tailored weights and fitness programme he carries out at home.

Alex Carruthers plays Roller Hockey for Wigan Warlords and trains in Coppull.

Alex was picked to compete for Great Britain and recently went to Philadelphia for a 10 day tournament.

The Lancashire Playing Fields Association has granted £250 at the last Committee meeting and Alex will be receiving his cheque very shortly from our Executive Member, Andy Brown.

Alex is a keen Roller Hockey player and been playing for over 8 years, as you can see in the picture, is the Netminder.

Andy Brown, the LPFAs Executive Member, Greenspace Coordinator for Chorley Council, will be attending one of Alex’s practice sessions in Coppull to present the grant cheque.

The grant was awarded to assist Alex with the purchase of equipment. Roller Hockey is quite an expensive sport at the level reached by Alex and there is no central funding for the sport.

Good luck for the future Alex.

Matthew Critchley has been playing cricket for 2 years for Chorley under 11’s whilst also playing for Chorley and District under 11’s, Chorley under 13’s and 15’s, is also in Brinscall 2nd Team and has recently has been selected for the Lancashire under 11’s team.

The LPFA were asked to assist with the purchase of the Lancashire squad uniform and it was pleased to assist with a grant of £155 to cover the kit costs.

Being selected by the Lancashire Schools Cricket Association squad means he will have to go on regular training sessions in Manchester at the Old Trafford Cricket ground, as well as local games and training. The games can be as far and wide as Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Wales and many other County grounds.

When a youngster is selected to play for County or beyond there is often no support given by the County and all expenses for travelling, fees, equipment and such are all borne by the parents.

Burnley Tennis Coaching Programme

This project was developed to increase junior participation of Tennis in the Pendle area. It is based at Marsden Park in Nelson and introduces tennis to local primary and secondary schools through taster sessions and talent identification days at Marsden Park.

The project applied to the LPFA’s one-off tennis fund (see bottom of page) and received £3,300 to kick start the project to promote tennis in the Burnley area.

Lewis Balyckyi , who began cycle racing when he was 9 and joined the Ribble Valley Junior Cycling Club who lent him his first racing cycle has been identified by British Cycling as a young talented rider. Lewis is currently a member of our Olympic Talent Programme after being invited in September 2006.

The Olympic Talent Programme offers membership to young riders of between 15 and 17 where it is believed they have the potential to take their sport through to success at an International level.

The programme provides coaching support, access to specialist activities and selected weekend and residential training camps. Outside these regular activities, in order to progress, riders are required to commit to a racing and training programme throughout the UK which they fund for themselves -including race entries, travel, equipment, clothing and any accommodation needs.

Lewis is currently ranked 11th in the under 16’s age group in the UK for Road and Track disciplines and still has another year in which to compete in this age group, having just moving up into this group last season. Lewis has won one National Series Road event to date and ended a year ranked 4th in Great Britain in his previous age group class.

The LPFA are pleased to support Lewis with a grant of £500 to assist with equipment and racing costs to help him progress this season.
